The seven-days long Management Development Program on New Paradigms in Fish Stock Assessment organized by BOBP-IGO and ICAR-CMFRI in collaboration with Ministry of Fisheries, Govt. of Sri Lanka concluded on June 1st, 2023.
The training was attended by officials from the fisheries department, researchers from NARA and faculty from universities in Sri Lanka. The participants were upskilled in advanced techniques and methodologies in fish stock assessment.
Speaking during the valediction of the training, Dr. P. Krishnan, Director, BOBP-IGO, emphasized the need for enhanced regional collaboration in research among countries on fisheries management and elaborated on the Organisation's initiatives aimed at fostering regional cooperation. He thanked the Sri Lanka Government for their support in the establishment of the Bay of Bengal Stock Assessment Network (BOB-SAN), an informal virtual network to connect stock assessment experts from the region with BOBP-IGO as the central coordinating point.
During the closing session, Prof. M.J.S. Wijeyaratne, Chairman of NARA thanked BOBP-IGO for organizing the stock assessment training program in Sri Lanka.
Mr. Dhammika Ranatunga, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Fisheries & Aquatic Resources Development (MFARD), Government of Sri Lanka extended his appreciation to BOBP-IGO, ICAR-CMFRI, and NARA for their diligent efforts in organizing the training program. He said he is looking forward to closer interactions among the institutions in the days to come and assured all support from the Government of Sri Lanka.
