The Inception Workshop of the
#RegLitter Project, a follow-up of the
#GloLitter project aimed at curbing sea-based marine plastic litter (SBMPL) being held in Ha Noi, Vietnam from 4-7 March 2024. Supported by the Governments of Norway and Republic of Korea, and implemented by IMO and FAO, the proposed initiative aims to build on the achievements of the GloLitter project to tackle marine plastic litter from sea-based sources, particularly focusing on Asia initially. In the Bay of Bengal,
#RegLitter will be implemented in India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Thailand.
Representing BOBP-IGO in the meeting, Mr. Rajdeep Mukherjee, Policy Analyst draw parallel between the orobjectives and the BOBLME project currently being implemented by the BOBP-IGO and partners. He emphasised on addressing the root causes of proliferation of marine pollution and empowering fisher communities to shepherd the sea. Mr. Mukherjee said that both
#RegLitter and
#BOBLME projects are institutionally and organically linked and together they can make an impact in dealing with SBMPL. About 30 representatives from India, Indonesia, Phillipines, Sri Lanka, Timor Leste, Thailand, Vietnam, Regional and International bodies, academia and NGOs are participating in the Inception Workshop.
