A 5-day international symposium on innovations in fishing technologies for sustainable and resilient fisheries and the 23rd Meeting of the United Nation’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) Working Group of Fishing Technology and Fish Behaviour (WGFTFB) begun on Feb 13 (Monday) 2023. The objective of the symposium is to explore solutions for the adoption of a set of sustainable fisheries measures, including the blue transformation of small-scale fisheries (SSF) and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) in fishing. Over 250 delegates from 30 countries including scientists, senior government officials, industry, and students are attending.
Shri. JN Swain, IAS, Secretary (Fisheries), Government of India inaugurated the Symposium. Dr J K Jena, Deputy Director General of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), Dr. C. Suvarna, lFS, Chief Executive, NFDB and Dr. J Balaji, IAS, Joint Secretary to the Department of Fisheries also attended the inauguration and interacted with the delegates.
SIDE EVENTS An Industry Expo and the Wave of Arts Events was also inaugurated at the sidelines of the International Symposium. In addition, a dialogue on the development of a regional marine fisheries platform for the Bay of Bengal region, and a brainstorming session on artificial reefs and sea ranching was held on 14th February 2023. The BOBP-IGO along with the National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB) and the Indian Council of Agricultural Research is organizing the event on behalf of the host, the Department of Fisheries, Govt. of India.
