The BOBP-IGO organised a stakeholder consultation on "Insurance as a Tool for Managing Marine Fisheries & Building Resilience" today, July 16, 2022, at Chennai. Participants were office bearers from ten different fisher welfare associations based at Chennai.
In his opening remarks, Dr. P. Krishnan provided an overview of marine fisheries insurance in India vis-à-vis the world, particularly in the light of changing climate.
The fisher representatives expressed that the cost of insurance was rising over time and becoming prohibitive. They called for creating insurance cooperatives, a point system for claim-free years, comprehensive insurance products that included the boat and crew, index-based insurance, etc. The fishers shared that their working days have reduced from about 210 to 150 in the last few years, affecting their livelihood.
