As a part of the activities under the World Bank-funded “Ocean Partnership for Sustainable Fisheries & Biodiversity Conservation – Models for Innovation & Reform”, BOBP-IGO set up a model small- scale fish processing unit in Puducherry. The model was set up in an old small processing unit run by Ms Anitha Mouttouvel along with her husband, Mr Mouttouvel. Anitha's old unit was dismantled, and the area was also expanded to provide for a decent small-scale processing unit that met the best hygiene and sanitation standards and could be run by a family. On the other hand, Mr Mouttouvel teamed with a group of day-fishers to teach them to catch yellowfin tuna in the most sustainable manner and feed Anitha's processing unit. Thus, a sound working partnership was established between Anitha and the group of 20 fishermen from the same village as that of Anitha. Named, AUROFISH, Anitha's enterprise got recognised in Puducherry and it has gradually spread wings in Delhi, Gurugram, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Chennai, supplying the best grade of yellowfin tuna to its clients. This initiative of BOBP-IGO and Anitha was duly recognised by the National Fisheries Development Board of the Government of India as an innovative step that could help in setting up of small-scale fish processing units and in turn help reducing post-harvest wastage and foster partnership between fishers and processors. On the occasion of the World Fisheries Day on 21 November 2021, the Government of India honoured Anitha Mouttouvel for the ‘Best Technology Infusion/Innovation’ and was awarded a cash price of Rupees one lakh and a certificate by the Hon'ble Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Government of India. The BOBP-IGO while acknowledging the funding support received from the World Bank and the TATA Trust, is of the strong opinion that such small-scale fish processing units can revolutionize the domestic marketing in India.
